Maintenance is Key to Healthy Living

Once your body has fully healed, routine Chiropractic care can help ensure that your physical problems do not return, and keep your body in optimal condition. Just like continuing an exercise program and eating well in order to sustain the benefits of exercise and proper diet, it is necessary to continue Chiropractic care to ensure the health of your musculoskeletal system.

When you make routine Chiropractic care a part of your lifestyle, you avoid many of the aches and pains that so many people suffer through, your joints will last longer and you will be able to engage in more of the activities you love.

Why Maintenance Care?

According to the US Department of Health, the most common cause of functional disability in people over 50 is spinal disorders. Why?? First, people do not realize how important spinal health is to overall health and how much spinal abnormalities impact muscles, nerves, even vital organs. Next, people falsely believe that if they lack pain, especially spinal pain, then their health is just fine.

Unfortunately, by the time you experience pain, the problem causing the pain is already well underway and will take longer to correct. Our spines are composed of an intricate series of parts, and each of those parts support or impact our muscles, nerves, and vital organs. The spine is subject to wear and tear, and if not taken care of, will have a ripple effect on our overall health. Just like the engine of a car, we must have our spines maintained on a routine basis if we are to avoid unnecessarily painful and costly consequences in the future.  Maintenance Chiropractic adjustments can help to keep the spine healthy, slow or prevent degeneration, and prevent the health problems that will ultimately result otherwise.

Spinal Problems...Can they be Prevented?

While certain spinal injuries are unavoidable, most spinal related issues are the result of normal, everyday activities. Strengthening the spine is something everyone can and should pursue now in order to help prevent or minimize spinal related health issues in the future. Some important keys to spinal health are as follows:

  1. Get adjusted regularly (1-2 times per month, depending on activity level)
  2. Stretch daily, or do low impact Pilates
  3. Eat a diet rich in natural sources of vitamins and minerals, especially calcium (i.e. green leafy vegetables)
  4. Perform core and paraspinal strengthening activities on a daily basis
  5. Adopt good posture habits

What are the Benefits of Regular Spinal Maintenance?

Regular spinal maintenance adjustments provide the same benefit as other preventive health services. For example, by going to the dentist on a regular basis for cleanings, the teeth and gums are kept healthy and any potentially harmful problems (i.e. cavities, gum disease, etc.) are identified and cured before they become major problems. By getting adjusted regularly, our patients stay out of pain, improve spinal function, and enjoy better overall health by optimizing the health of the nervous system. Because the nervous system controls all body systems, including the immune and digestive systems, many of our patients report not getting sick as often as their friends/family/neighbors.

Is Maintenance Care Covered by Insurance?

Chiropractic adjustments for purposes other than active treatment of a musculoskeletal injury are considered preventative rather than "medically necessary".
Although preventing health problems before they start makes perfect sense, unfortunately insurance companies have yet to include most preventive medical services, including preventive, maintenance Chiropractic adjustments as part of their standard coverage.  Thankfully, we do have some local employer groups who have negotiated regular maintenance wellness Chiropractic adjustments as part of their coverage.

If your plan does not, we invite you to contact your employer and insurance company to request inclusion of preventive chiropractic care as part of any standard benefit package that is provided in the future.
